About Chiropractic
WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
Chiropractic is a field of healthcare focusing on the restoration of normal function between the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems. The goals are restoring movement, both on a regional level (ie, neck, low back) and an intersegmental level (between each vertebra); relieving pain; and maintaining proper biomechanics once they are achieved. The idea in chiropractic is to utilize conservative, manual therapies, while avoiding or limiting the use of medications and surgical procedures when possible. Chiropractic is often used as a first line of treatment for pain and injury before advancing to more invasive treatments such as steroid injections or surgical procedures. It is also often used as a rehabilitative treatment after surgery.
WHICH MANUAL THERAPIES ARE USED?
Manual treatments include joint manipulation, also called an adjustment, to restore balance, symmetry, and mobility in the spine and extremities. Restricted mobility and inflammation affect the function of nearby nerves and sensitizes nerve receptors to painful stimuli. Through joint manipulation, circulation is increased, and inflammation and pain are decreased.
Manual therapy also involves evaluation and treatment of muscles and their overlying connective tissues. This involves application of heat therapy, cold therapy, electric stimulation, ultrasound, and myofascial therapy as needed by each individual patient.
Patients are also guided through therapeutic exercises for use at home to support the treatment received at the office and to prevent further injury. Additionally, patients receive tips on improving posture and hints on proper ergonomics (workplace activities).
Drs. Blaine and Jana also offer nutritional advice to assist the body in the healing process.
